Does Open Doors Communication Policy Work?

Does Open Doors Communication Policy Work?

In an organization I worked with, the chairman gave an instruction to remove all the partitions and walls. He said, “My sight should not hit any wall when I go out from the lift”. He even instructed the building management team to change how the staff was positioned. Team leaders in the front facing the clients followed by the second layer of subordinate and so on. One team leader said that I came to be a reception answering questions such as “where was the bathroom!”

Although it was a good move in my opinion, yet employees did not get it at all. Failure to address the status culture along with a proper change program led to having the walls raised again after a few years. Open doors policy did not mean removing the actual walls rather than making oneself approachable and accessible which was not managed well.
